Earth Electrical NSW is owned and operated by Matt Durkin, a licensed electrician based in Lennox Head, New South Wales. The business provides residential, commercial and new-build electrical services across the Northern Rivers, including Ballina, Byron Bay, Bangalow and Alstonville.
A local trade, run like one
Earth Electrical is a small operation on purpose. When you call, you get Matt — not a call centre, not a booking system that hands you to whoever is closest. That means we can only take on so much work at once, and it also means the person who quoted the job is the person who turns up to do it.
Most of our work comes from people who have used us before or been told about us by someone who has. That is the whole business model, and it is why turning up on time matters more to us than it might to a franchise.
What we actually get told
The reviews we get are rarely about the wiring. They are about arriving when we said we would, explaining what we found in language that makes sense, giving honest advice about what does and does not need doing, and leaving the house the way we found it. One client specifically thanked us for taking our boots off. That is the standard.
The work
We split fairly evenly between three kinds of job. There is domestic maintenance and repair — the faults, the extra points, the lighting upgrades. There is new-build and renovation work with local builders, from pre-wire through to fit-off. And there is commercial and strata maintenance for Northern Rivers businesses and buildings who want one contractor who knows the site.
We also do a growing amount of EV charger work as more of the region switches over, and a lot of outdoor and landscape lighting, which suits the way people live here.
Licensed, insured and certified
Earth Electrical NSW holds a NSW electrical contractor licence and carries public liability insurance. Every job involving new or altered wiring is issued with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, confirming the installation meets AS/NZS 3000. Keep those certificates — conveyancers and insurers ask for them.
Coastal conditions
Working between Byron and Ballina means salt air is a design constraint, not an afterthought. Standard outdoor fittings that would last a decade inland can start corroding within a year a few streets from the surf. We specify coastal-rated hardware as the default near the coast rather than selling it as an upgrade, because the alternative is coming back to replace it.
