Why outdoor electrical fittings fail so fast near the coast

Salt-laden air accelerates corrosion of outdoor electrical fittings, causing standard hardware to fail within one to three years near the coast. Specifying IP65-rated enclosures, 316 marine-grade stainless fixings, and sealed fittings with corrosion-resistant housings extends service life substantially in coastal Northern Rivers conditions.

If you live within a few streets of the beach anywhere between Byron and Ballina, you will have noticed that outdoor things do not last. Hinges, screws, garden taps, barbecue fittings. Electrical hardware is no different, and it fails in ways that matter more.

We replace a lot of outdoor power points and garden lighting that is only two or three years old. Almost none of it was defective. It was simply the wrong specification for where it was installed.

What salt actually does

Salt-laden air deposits chloride on every exposed surface. Chloride is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air — so the surface stays damp far longer than the weather alone would suggest. That damp, salty film is an electrolyte, and it drives galvanic corrosion wherever two dissimilar metals sit in contact.

In an outdoor power point, that means the screws, the spring contacts, the earth connection and the metal within the enclosure all corrode at once. The seal degrades, moisture gets inside, and now you have a leakage path to earth.

That is generally the point where the homeowner rings us — not about corrosion, but because the safety switch keeps tripping.

The bit most people get wrong

Almost everyone knows to look for an IP rating. IP65, weatherproof, tick.

But the IP rating describes how well the enclosure keeps water and dust out on the day it was made. It says nothing whatsoever about what the enclosure and its fixings are made of, or how long they will survive salt exposure. A perfectly rated IP65 fitting with mild steel screws is a twelve-month fitting on a Lennox Head deck.

Material matters at least as much as rating.

What to actually specify near the coast

316 marine-grade stainless, not 304. The two look identical. 304 is fine inland; it will show tea staining and eventually pit within sight of the ocean. 316 contains molybdenum, which is what gives it chloride resistance. If a supplier cannot tell you which grade it is, assume 304.

Powder-coated marine-grade aluminium for light fitting bodies, rather than cheap die-cast alloys that swell and split as they corrode.

Sealed, gasketed enclosures with UV-stable polymer bodies for power points and junctions, and check the gasket material rather than just the rating.

Solid brass for garden and in-ground lighting. It develops a patina rather than failing, and it will still be serviceable in fifteen years.

Correct drainage. Fittings that hold water at the bottom of the housing fail regardless of what they are made of. Weep holes must actually be at the low point once the fitting is installed at its final angle.

Don't forget the switchboard

An external switchboard on the seaward side of a house cops the same exposure as everything else, and it is the least visible. We open coastal boards and find surface rust on breaker terminals, corroded neutral bars and degraded door seals surprisingly often.

If your board is outside and facing the water, having it inspected every few years is a sensible habit. Corroded terminations create resistance, resistance creates heat, and heat in a switchboard is how fires start.

Simple maintenance that genuinely helps

  • Rinse exposed outdoor fittings with fresh water occasionally — the same logic as hosing a boat trailer
  • Do not use pressure washers on electrical enclosures, which forces water past seals
  • Replace corroded fixings early rather than after the housing itself is damaged
  • Get outdoor power points on the seaward elevation checked if they are more than five years old

The economics

Marine-grade fittings typically cost 30 to 50 percent more than standard equivalents. Replacing failed fittings costs the hardware again plus a call-out, and in the meantime you may have had months of nuisance tripping.

We specify coastal-rated hardware as the default on outdoor lighting and external work near the coast rather than presenting it as an upgrade, because the cheaper option is not actually cheaper. It just moves the cost.

Common questions

How far inland does salt air affect electrical fittings?

The effect is strongest within about a kilometre of the surf and remains significant to roughly five kilometres, depending on prevailing winds and terrain. Exposed elevated sites like Skennars Head see more effect than sheltered positions at the same distance.

What IP rating do outdoor electrical fittings need?

IP65 is a sensible minimum for anything exposed to weather — protected against dust and low-pressure water jets. In-ground and near-pool fittings need IP67 or IP68. IP rating alone does not address corrosion; material choice matters just as much.

Can corroded outdoor power points be dangerous?

Yes. Corrosion degrades the seal and allows moisture into the enclosure, creating a leakage path to earth. That is a shock risk, and it is one of the most common causes of nuisance safety switch tripping in coastal homes.
