Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

A safety switch trips when it detects current leaking to earth — usually from a faulty appliance, water in an outdoor power point or light fitting, damaged cable insulation, or too many appliances sharing one RCD. You can often identify a faulty appliance by unplugging everything, resetting, and reconnecting items one at a time.

A safety switch — properly called an RCD, or residual current device — is not a fuse. It is not there to protect your wiring from overload. It is there to protect you, and it does that by comparing the current flowing out to the current flowing back. If more goes out than comes back, some of it is going somewhere it should not — through the earth, or through a person. At around 30 milliamps of difference, it cuts power in under 30 milliseconds.

So when it trips, it has detected something real. The question is what.

The six usual suspects

A faulty appliance. By a long way the most common cause. Old kettles, toasters, washing machines, fridges and anything with a heating element are the frequent offenders. Insulation inside the appliance breaks down and a small amount of current starts leaking to the chassis.

Water in an outdoor point or fitting. In our climate this is the second most common cause. Rain gets into an outdoor power point, a garden light, a pool pump or a fitting with a failed seal, and you get a leakage path. Classic symptom: it trips during or shortly after rain and behaves itself once things dry out.

Damaged cable insulation. A nail or screw through a cable during an unrelated job, rodent damage in the roof space, or cable that has simply aged past its life. This one does not fix itself and needs tracing.

Cumulative leakage. Every appliance leaks a tiny amount of current to earth — a few milliamps at most. Put enough of them on one RCD and the total can creep up towards the trip threshold, so the circuit sits on a knife edge and trips when one more thing switches on. Common on older boards where a single RCD covers half the house.

A failing RCD. They are mechanical devices and they wear out, particularly in coastal humidity. An RCD that trips with no load connected at all is usually the problem itself.

Lightning and surge damage. Storm season on the plateau produces plenty of these. A surge can damage insulation inside an appliance or the wiring without any visible sign.

Narrowing it down yourself

You can safely do this much before calling anyone:

  • Note which switch tripped. If it is an RCD, everything on it goes dead. If it is a circuit breaker only, you are looking at an overload rather than an earth fault.
  • Turn off and unplug everything on the affected circuit.
  • Reset the switch. If it holds, you have an appliance problem.
  • Plug things back in one at a time, waiting a moment between each. The one that trips it is your answer.
  • If it trips immediately with nothing plugged in, stop. The fault is in the fixed wiring and needs testing.

Write down what you find. It genuinely saves diagnostic time — and therefore money — when we arrive.

When to stop and call

Stop if any of the following apply:

  • It trips with everything unplugged
  • There is a burning smell, scorch marks, or a warm switch plate or outlet
  • It trips the moment you reset it, repeatedly
  • Someone has felt a tingle from an appliance, a tap or an outlet
  • The switchboard itself is warm, buzzing or making a clicking sound

A tingle from a tap or an appliance is not a minor complaint. It means current is finding a path through the building's metalwork, and the next person to touch it under wetter conditions may get a lot more than a tingle.

What we actually do

Fault finding is systematic, not intuitive. We split the affected circuit at the board and work outward with insulation resistance and continuity testing, isolating section by section until the fault is proven rather than guessed at. On most jobs the cause is found in the first hour. Water ingress and appliance faults are usually straightforward; a damaged cable inside a wall takes longer to locate but is still very much findable.

The thing worth remembering

A safety switch tripping is an annoyance. A safety switch that has been bypassed, or a house that never had one, is a genuine risk. If your board still runs ceramic fuses with no RCD protection at all, that is the more urgent conversation — and it is a switchboard upgrade, not a fault-finding job.

Common questions

Is it safe to keep resetting a safety switch that trips?

Resetting once to test is reasonable. Repeatedly resetting a switch that keeps tripping is not — the RCD is detecting a genuine earth fault and you are overriding a device that is protecting people from electrocution.

Can rain cause a safety switch to trip?

Yes, and it is one of the most common causes in the Northern Rivers. Water entering an outdoor power point, garden light or roof-space fitting creates a leakage path to earth. It often trips during rain and resets once things dry out.

How do I find which appliance is tripping the safety switch?

Turn off and unplug every appliance on the affected circuit, reset the switch, then plug items back in one at a time. The one that trips it is your culprit. If it trips with everything unplugged, the fault is in the wiring.
